Neither Hurricane Irma or Katia are forecast to affect JSC.
At 4PM CDT, Hurricane Irma was located at 18.8 N 65.4 W or 1180 miles ESE of the Kennedy Space Center, moving WNW at 16 MPH. Maximum sustained winds were 185 MPH. Irma is forecast to turn north on Saturday. The threat of direct hurricane impacts in Florida has increased over the weekend and into early next week. Hurricane Watches could be issued for parts of Florida as early as Thursday.
Katia was upgraded to hurricane status this afternoon. At 4PM CDT Katia was located at 21.7N 95.1W or about 550 miles south of JSC moving SE at 3 mph. Maximum winds are 75 mph. Katia is forecast to turn southwest tomorrow and make landfall in the Mexican state of Veracruz Friday evening.
