The government shutdown affects our entire JSC community, civil servants and contractors.  The Starport Exchange is bringing organizations together to help answer questions about employee benefits, loan programs, employee assistance, and general services in the community.  The event is scheduled for Friday, January 25, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gilruth Center Destiny Ballroom.  The event is an open house format, so come by anytime during the event hours.  Center Director, Mark Geyer, will share some opening remarks at 11 a.m.

JSC Human Resources

Provide general guidance understanding benefits during furlough, and other questions for civil servants.

 JSC Federal Credit Union

Discuss loan options and the process for signing up for JSC FCU membership.

 Employee Assistance Program

Discuss JSC EAP services and available community resources, i.e. – information for local food banks and utility assistance.  An EAP Counselor is also available for short, private discussions.  Employees experiencing emotional crisis can call the EAP main number 281-483-6130 and will be routed to a counselor.  EAP is an essential function and is operating during normal business hours.

Laptop Station from IRD

Laptops are available to access Employee Express and access other needed information during the furlough.  IRD personnel will also be on hand to address questions related to IT – device usage, passwords, PIV badges, etc.

CCISD Cares 

Discuss options for students and parents who are in the Clear Creek Independent School District.   Also, learn how to fast track to become a substitute teacher within the school district.

 JSC Legal Office

Discuss legal questions and concerns from employees.  Provide information and forms for outside work approval.

JSC CFO Office

Provide general information about government employee financial matters such as WebTADS, payroll and government travel cards.

JSC Starport

As a stress reliever during the furlough, Starport is providing free access to the Strength and Cardio Center and Group Exercise Classes for the remainder of the shutdown for the JSC team that is not currently membership holders.  Starport is open regular hours Monday through Friday 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Please bring your badge and be prepared to fill out paperwork to apply for fitness facility use.

City of Friendswood

Staff will be available to let JSC employees know how to request relief on utility bills, etc.

 Friendswood ISD

A representative will be available to answer questions and discuss financial options for students and parents in Friendswood ISD.

Houston Food Bank (not confirmed)

Coordinators from the Houston Food Bank will provide information about services offered by the HFB and how to connect with needed resources; provide application assistance for services such as SNAP, Medicare, CHIP, etc.; and give information on food pantries in the area and United Way Bay Area assistance.

Texas Workforce Commission

A representative from the Texas Workforce Commission will be available to explain unemployment benefits and answer questions about the process.

 United Way HELPLINE/2-1-1 Texas

An information and referral service with a free confidential helpline operated by the United Way of Greater Houston 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained HELPLINE specialists connect those in need with critical social services such as food, shelter, legal aid, Hurricane Harvey disaster case management and much more. United Way of Greater Houston – Bay Area Center has a trained specialist on-site M – F, 8am – 5pm.

 United Way THRIVE

The THRIVE Center at Bay Area helps families along the path to financial stability. A representative will be available to discuss services offered through the THRIVE program including Financial Coaching (reduce debt, increase credit score, start a savings plan, manage bills, learn how to budget), Employment Coaching (job application templates, resume preparation, job leads, interviewing skills, set up job search websites, vocational training), and Resources Support (rent and utility assistance, healthcare enrollment, SNAP enrollment, Social Security/Disability, advocacy).

Neighborhood Tax Centers

A program of Baker Ripley in collaboration with United Way, representatives will be available to discuss FREE quality tax preparation for families and individuals earning up to $58,000 annually. The Tax Center at Bay Area opens Monday, January 28, M – F, 11am – 7pm through April 15.

University of Houston – Clear Lake (not confirmed)

Representatives will be available to discuss employment opportunities and other campus programs and resources.
